I’m very happy to be selected a finalist for the Frechen Ceramics Award alongside a stellar lineup of international artists working in ceramics.

I will be showing my installation Bonne Chance as part of the finalist exhibition at MUSEUM KERAMION.
The awarding of the Frechen Ceramics Award has a long tradition at Keramion. In 2025, the prize will be awarded for the 20th time. The exhibition opens on Monday April 28, 2025 from 6-8 pm with the announcement of the winners and a welcoming address by Ina Brandes MdL, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine Westphalia. The exhibition is on view through August 31, 2025.

Since the work breaks and changes during the run of the exhibition, I have to remake the sculpture every time it is shown. Fortunately the material can be recycled- by now I have made 20 of these salt fists. (3 exhibitions, 1 test, 1 screw up)

Johanna Strobel’s new, expansive sculptures emerge from her ongoing exploration of ceramic materials, architectural structures, and semantically charged forms. Suspended from the ceiling, the works consist of interwoven, unglazed ceramic bands reminiscent of anatomical structures—rib cages, torsos, pelvises. At the center of many of these constructions are glossy, dark spheres—at once moon, apple, heart, or womb. These hybrid forms oscillate between body and object, between symbol and substance. Strobel’s practice draws on concepts such as change, entropy, connectivity, and information. Her works interweave references from different eras, cultural contexts, and theoretical fields, engaging with the attribution and dissolution of meaning, the construction of subjectivity and objecthood, and their inscription into the everyday. The knot—a central motif in this body of work—becomes both sculptural and conceptual principle: a process that translates linear motion into spatial structure. The materials used—ceramic, cotton, aluminum—create trompe-l’œil effects that question the relationship between softness and hardness, decoration and function. In this way, Strobel creates complex object systems that operate as thought-figures—fragile equilibriums between order and chaos, presence and absence, visibility and meaning.

I’m very happy to invite you to the opening of THE MOON IS NO DOOR @heldenreizer_contemporary opening on Thursday April 3 from 6-9pm.
I’ll be showing a new series of ceramics sculptures in best company together with @luisabaldhuber and @michaelhirschbichler

The group exhibition The Moon Is No Door brings together three artistic positions that engage in striking ways with space, perception, and meaning. Its point of departure is a quote from Sylvia Plath’s poem The Moon and the Yew Tree (1961), in which inner landscapes of thought intertwine with cosmic space. In the poem, color and light become means to render both mental and external dimensions of space tangible. The exhibition title plays with this poetic dissonance: The moon is no door—yet precisely through this literal impossibility, a conceptual space opens between inside and outside, between the material and the imaginary, between meaning and ambiguity. Subjectivity here appears not merely as a mode of spatial existence, but reveals that it is not the human who produces space, but space that shapes the human.

In their formal and conceptual diversity, the three positions negotiate the central questions of the exhibition: space as a realm of possibility, as a conceptual structure, as a body. The Moon Is No Door opens not only metaphorical threshold spaces between inside and outside, but also sketches a poetic coordinate system of material, light, structure, and imagination.

My Heart is a Knot in Motion talks about threads we follow and that we pass on to tell stories and how these stories shape the world. And about tying tight knots, about becoming entangled, about networks that are not about structure and technology but about safety, care, and love. About nets of (interspecies) solidarity and connectivity that we cannot allow to unravel. That we need to weave these nets tighter so that not another single knot will slip. And about legendary great man solving knots with swords. Great men that we need to overcome and swords we need to bury so that these swords may fossilize. So that we can tell new stories, not about great men, not about swords, but about nets that can catch, contain and carry. Because these new stories can create new worlds.

My Heart is not a clock is an installation of two ceramic sculptures and a virtual reality video.

The immersive video explores concepts of circular time and the loss of species through human caused extinction. Situated in a stylized version of the Villa Farnesina in Rome, the voiceover narration follows the example of the passenger pigeon’s extinction in the early 20th century and its possible future de-extinction through cloning throughout the circle of time.

If you imagine circular time as if on a compass the absent lies as a counterpoint to the temporal present between the future and the past. At least that’s what someone on Reddit explained.

The frescos on the walls of the loggia of the villa farnesina feature nothing but empty pedestals painted in grisaille.

Martha, the last known passenger pigeon died on September 1st, 1914 in the Cincinnati zoo. Her skin is preserved as part of the Smithsonian collection.

When you‘re reported dead meta will memorialize your account so better set up a legacy contact in time.

De-extinction (also known as resurrection biology, or species revivalism) is the process of generating an organism that either resembles or is an extinct species.

My Heart is not a clock is an installation of two ceramic sculptures and a virtual reality video.

The immersive video explores philosophical concepts of circular time and the loss of species through human caused extinction. Situated in a stylized version of the Villa Farnesina in Rome, the voiceover narration follows the example of the passenger pigeon’s extinction in the early 20th century and its possible future de-extinction through cloning throughout the circle of time.

The multiple-part ceramics sculptures contain infrared heat emitters. Over time a cast paraffin wax bird melts into the lower part of the first sculpture, which functions as an egg-shaped mold and so the bird become an egg again. The second sister sculpture reverses this process – the egg melts into a bird shaped mold. With every iteration some of the wax evaporates, so that in the end just fragments of birds and eggs are cast and remelted until all the wax is gone - the cycle accelerates until it stops.

In a small room a virtual world expands. Destruction and rebirth repeat not without cost. Accelerated cycles are running dead in the end. History repeats itself - but life passes.

New (ly revised) website! Yay!
Ever since I made my first artist website (like 10 years ago) I think once a year: now my website is perfect! It’s done! Now I just have to update it regularly! (I used to think that about my artist statement, too)
And then the next year I think of a new feature, functionality, design, content and then I revise and adapt it. Ugh! It’s never going to be finished. But for the moment and hopefully until next year I‘m really happy with the status quo. I even added the first work I ever made in art school and other older works from before 2018 when I was still studying in Munich. Take a look before I take it down again 🫣

Things have been so busy and exciting the last day

Things have been so busy and exciting the last days, weeks, months - that I never got to post any wip images of this #ceramic #sculpture that I made between February and March and just showed on the roof top of @newartdealers with @galerielesmeister
This piece was probably the most complicated and nerve wrecking thing I’ve made so far - I died a hundred deaths on the Uber ride from the #studio to the #kiln but luckily nothing broke!
It’s a #birdbath, has a #living #heart and features a #nestingsite for #insects in the #pedestal. I hope to show it somewhere #outside for a longer time soon so that it can be enjoyed by human and non-human city dwellers alike.

I’ve always been shy about speaking in front of

I’ve always been shy about speaking in front of groups of people. When I was 20 I had to give my first presentation at university in a seminar on Analytic Geometry II. It was something about Euclidean vector spaces and I was so anxious about it that my dad had to practice it with me several times (which was an incredible drag – it was over an hour long). I couldn’t sleep the night before and during the presentation I had a bright red head, burning cheeks, and shaking hands.

Six months ago I was invited to interview to potentially give a TED Talk with @tedxcuny. One of my students had suggested me (without me knowing) because my class was very inspiring to her. I was so happy and flattered! I mean what could you hope for as a teacher? Still my first impulse was saying ‘no thank you’, because I thought that maybe I wouldn’t have the guts to be speaking in front of more than 20 people, in public, and most of all next to renowned scientists and experts. Then I did the interview anyway because what was there to loose and when the programming team invited me to speak at the conference I didn’t want to be a coward and bail.

It took me a long time to think about what I could say to hundreds of people that would be inspiring to them – especially to a young audience – in these dark times of war, violence, climate crisis and hyper capitalism. And when I had figured something out it was a lot of work: writing, editing, thinking of visuals, timing, animating, practicing, memorizing, practicing, making an outfit, practicing, hating the outfit, practicing, making a new one, practicing, practicing, practicing. And then yesterday

I GAVE A TEDxTALK!!

And it went really well!

Johanna Strobel is an interdisciplinary artist, working across installation, sculpture, painting, video and VR. She holds degrees in Information Science and Mathematics from Regensburg University and graduated in Painting and Graphics from the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. In 2020 she received an MFA from Hunter College. Johanna’s work is concerned with time and related concepts like change, entropy, and information. Weaving together disparate references spanning across histories and geographies, she explores the entanglement between philosophy, semiotics and actuality. Johanna’s work was shown in exhibitions in Germany, Italy, Taiwan, Korea, Canada and the US, including New Museum Nuremberg, Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn, Museum Gunzenhauser, Chemnitz, Kunstverein Munich, Bethanien, Berlin, Nada House, New York, and NARS Foundation, Brooklyn. Johanna received grants among others by the German Academic Exchange Service, the State of Bavaria, the German Artist Alliance and the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. 40 #artists and 10 #galleries in my building and the sister building across the street are opening their spaces for #openstudios next Saturday 11/18 from 12-6 pm.

It’s the first open studios since before the pandemic and I’m super excited!!

🕊My heart is not a Clock (running out), 2023, ceramics, paraffin wax, silicone, ceramic heating element, cable, fasteners, 28 x 9 x 9 inches
Under a heating element a cast paraffin bird melts into the lower part of the sculpture that contains as an egg-shaped mold and becomes an egg again. A sister sculpture reverses the process – the egg melts into a bird shaped mold. With every iteration some of the paraffin evaporates, just fragments are cast and remelted until all the wax is gone - the cycle stops.🥚
