Figures is a motion sensitive wall sculpture that consists of a painting, displaying a figure from cat’s cradle, framed by a two-way- mirrored box and lit by LEDs controlled by an infra red sensor. In default the LEDs are on and the painting is visible through the transparent mirror. When approached, i.e. motion is detected, the LEDs switch off and the mirror becomes opaque, which creates a moment of frustration for the viewer who then just sees their own reflection in the mirror. The painting can only be seen from a distance or the viewer, once they have approached, have to stand very still, look at their reflection and wait patiently for the LEDs to switch back on and reveal the painting again.
